Retro Disney Halloween

Remember the good old movies we used to love to watch as kids? You know the ones that would always show around Halloween on Disney Channel? Yup! The ones they never air anymore. Let us travel down nostalgia rode and relive some of our favorite films.

Hocus pocus (1993)

Bette Midler Disney animated GIF

A classic. An all time favorite. Personally my favorite. This a must every Halloween. It's even good when it's not Halloween. This film was originally supposed to just be a Disney original but it was made into a motion picture, it was just that good. It's the story of three witches who are executed for their crimes. They would feast on children's souls in order to stay young.

Just as the trio is about to be hung they cast a spell in which they will return again if a virgin were to light the black candle on  Hallows Eve and of course someone does. His name is Max and to most of us he was a mayor crush back in the 90's.

Omri Katz Confused animated GIF

Max has just moved to a new town and is stuck taking is little sister Dani trick or treating. Things get interesting when they end up at the girl he likes house. Alison and Dani share a common interest for the Sanderson sisters and decide to check out the place where these witches lived. Thanks to Max they end up bringing them back from the dead, they must do the impossible to put them back in their graves.

This hilarious film will have you laughing from beginning to end. Go grab some popcorn and let the fun begin!

Fun fact: Sarah Jessica Parker plays a witch who was executed during the Salem witch trails in the early 1600's. The actress later did some research on her background and was shocked to discover that her 10th great grandmother Esther Elwell was arrested in Salem in the late 1600's for commiting "Sundry acts of witchcraft" and choking a neighbour to death.

Tower of Terror (1997)

This movie was actually pretty scary for Disney. The films starts of with five people dying in an elevator, including a little girl who is a child actress. Not only do they die but they become ghosts who haunt the hotel in which they lost there lives. No one knows what caused the accident.Sixty years pass by and  newspaper reporter Buzzy Crocker and his niece Anna appear.

Soon they meet an interesting elderly women by the name of Abigail Gregory. She claims that the nanny of the little girl who was also on the elevator caused this incident. She tried to cast en evil spell on the child actress but it backfired and trapped all five members inside. The only way to reverse the spell is to fix the elevator and to find an object that belonged to each member who was aboard. Then they must again all take the elevator at the same time on Halloween to become free spirits.

Crocker and his niece later discover that Abigail wasn't trying to help these poor souls, her plan was rather quiet dark. She seeks revenge on her little sister, the child actress and they had just given her what she needed to complete the spell. No need to worry, this is Disney we're talking about so the movie doesn't end tragically. The two sisters make up and all five spirits descend to heaven. This film is guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

Fun fact: Disney used this film to test their theory that they could make movies from their rides. Later other rides where made into movies such as the Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean.

Underwraps (1997)

The story of a  300 year old mummy who is revived by three preteens, Marshall, Gilbert and Amy. Although the mummy freaks the kids out at first they take a liking to him quickly after finding out he is friendly. He is later baptized as Harold. The kids must get Harold back to his coffin before midnight on Halloween, if they fail he will become dust. Along the way they also Discover who was the love of Harold's life.  This heart warming comedy is a must see.

Fun fact: Eric Carmen's song  "All by myself" is the only song featured in the entire film.

Don't look under the bed (1999)

Do you believe in the bogey man? Well if you didn't before you will after you see this film. I know i did. Francis is a 14 year old girl who starts high school a year early. Strange things occur in her town and she is being framed for such events. Larry Houdini who claims to be an imaginary friend offers her his help. He tells her that the Bogey man is framing her. Francis has a hard time believing him but finally gives in. She tries to prove to people Larry exists but this only makes everyone question her sanity.

Francis later learns that Larry is her younger brother Darwin's imaginary friend and that bogey men are created when you stop believing in them. Larry also turns into a bogey man briefly since Francis had told her kid brother to grow up. At the end Larry kisses Frances on the lips. The story is a bit twisted. Maybe this is to creepy for Disney.

Fun fact: The actress who played Francis was actually 20 years old at the time.

Mom's Got a date with a vampire (2000)

Siblings Adam and Chelsea have big plans but find themselves unable to accomplish them on the account of there mother grounding them. They have the perfect solution to their problem. They set there mother up on a date with a dreamy mysterious man but they weren't counting on him being a blood thirsty vampire. Taylor, the youngest brother is who discovers this. The three siblings must forget their previous plans and rescue their mother (Lynette) before it is to late.

This fun Disney original is a must see for your October movie list. It's fun, funny and shows the love really does conquer all.

Fun Fact: Dimitri and Lynette go to a restaurant called "Renfield's". Renfield is Dracula's crazy bug eating sidekick.

Are you in the Halloween mood yet? October will end in just a week. Relive your favorite classics! On your marks get set go! which movie will you watch first? ;)

Pumkin's are in the air!

Halloween! The only day of the year where we can choose to be anyone we want to be. So if you’re a Disney fan like me it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what you’re planning on being. The only problem that tends to get in the way of our fun is our budget. Costumes just aren’t cheap but no worries there are tons of substitutes that work way better.

So you want to be a Disney Princess?

Costumes can be made with items you already own. In this picture we have three well known Disney Ladies. Esmeralda, Snow White and Rapunzel. As we can see they have all made their outfits with simple things we can find in our closets; skirts, blouses, dresses and shoes.  Although you might need to buy a few items you don't have, it will be cheaper than buying the actual costume.

Tip: If you have the perfect item for your desired costume but it’s not the right color you can always dye it.

So you want to be a Disney Couple?

Time is something that might not always be on our side. This is a last minute costume my boyfriend and I did last Halloween.  As you can see we were Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable.

Items needed for Kim:                                       Items needed for Ron:
·         Red or Orange hair Spray                                        Blue jeans
·         Black crop top                                                        Black T-Shirt
·         Green jeans                                                     Black Gloves
·         Black gloves                                                          Black Sneakers
·         Brown belt                                                             Optional: Blonde wig
·         Black boots or flats

·

Just for fun
A sticker was printed out (the kimmunicator) and placed on the back of a cheap iphone case I had bought just for the occasion. So my phone was the Kimmunicator!
We didn’t have a real naked mole rat so we had a sticker one which we placed on a foam surface and then cut out.

So you want to be your favorite Disney Character?

Creativity really is key. Above we have two simple costumes to make. Angel from Lilo and Stich and Boo from Monsters Inc.
For the Angel Costume all that was used was a pink dress of your choice, a head band, wires and some extra pink fabric to wrap the wires in and form Angel’s ears. Face and body paint could be added.
For the Boo costume a long pink shirt, some purple leggings, a pair of white converse and pigtails of course were used.

The sky is the limit. Go crazy with your Disney Costumes. Make a zombie version. Make your costume unique and most important of all, have fun!

3 bedtime stories you should never tell your kids!

Maybe some of you already know this, then again some of you might not. To all of those who don't know i ask, are you ready to find out the dark inspiration behind our favorite Disney movies?

What would happen if you found out  that the stories  we've  grown so fondly to were actually meant to be told in a entirely different way. A dark way. What would happen if Eric didn't end up marrying Ariel or if Aurora wasn't awoken my a sweet kiss from her prince. What if there were no happy endings?

The little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Rapunzel among others were not written originally by Walt Disney. They were written by Charles Perrault,  the German Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. Reader beware, their stories may cause use goosebumps. Each story is creepier than the other.

1. Sleeping Beauty

One of the creepiest tales is the one of Sleeping Beauty.  In the original version Aurora was not awoken by tender kisses from her sweet prince. The reason behind her eyes opening was due to her giving birth to twins, one boy and one girl. Their names were Sun and Luna. One of the babies suckled on her finger, removing the splinter which ended the curse, and woke the princess from her slumber.

So how did Sleeping Beauty end up being pregnant? Yup. You guessed it. One day a Prince stumbled across what he thought was an empty castle only to find a sleeping maiden. He tried to wake her up but no matter what he tried, she remained in a deep slumber. So he takes advantage of her and rapes her.

The prince returns to the castle only to find that the princess is a awake and she is not alone, Luna and Sun are with her. The prince was overjoyed. He told Thalia (Sleeping Beauty name in this version) who he was and how he knew her and what had happened. So Thalia and the prince end up falling in love. If rape isn't a red flag i don't know what is.

But that's not the worst part. The prince is married. And of course his wife has to find out  about this bizarre affair. She is set on getting revenge and ends up setting a chef to cook Thalia's infants. Thankfully the cook takes mercy on the babies and decides to kill a goat instead.

So the prince, Thalia and the kids run off together and live happily ever after. Oh yeah and they get married too. There's and even creepier version where Sleeping Beauty's rapist is her own father.

2. The Little Mermaid

The little mermaid is one of the saddest tales. She really did give it all for love. Ariel lays eyes on a human prince and just like in Disney's version, it is love at first sight. For her anyway. She first sees Eric on a boat which ends up splitting in half. Titanic ll? Ariel rescues the prince from drowning and basically stalks him every following day.

The human world is fascinating to the little mermaid and she wishes to be part of it.  So she makes it possible by visiting the sea witch. Familiar so far right? Well here is were things get interesting. The sea witch gave the little mermaid a potion that would turn her fish tail into a pair of human legs. But beware said the witch, each step you take will be like walking on razor sharp swords. The little mermaid didn't mind for she was deeply in love with the prince, she would do anything for him. Even abandon her sister's and father. If she were to drink the potion she could never return to her family. She could never again be a mermaid.

As the story goes nothing is free. Ariel had a lovely voice and it was to be used as payment. But the way the sea witch obtains it is not rated G. Stick out you're tongue child she said, and so the little mermaid did. Chop chop chop!

So the voiceless mermaid sets of in hopes of finding her prince. Not only must she find him but she must also marry him. If someone else were to marry him she would die the day after. And what do you know? He does marry another princess but only because he believes this is the girl who saved him from drowning. Ariel has no voice so she cannot tell him the truth.

Ariel's sister's appear in the ocean and tell her that they have sold their hair to the sea witch. They have found a way for her to live. In exchange for their hair they have received a sharp knife. Ariel must kill her sweet prince with this knife inserting it right through his heart. Ariel loves her prince so much that she'd rather die than kill the man she loves. So she dies and turns into sea foam.

3. Cinderella

Cinderella was a very humble person. When her father went away on a trip he asked her what she wanted him to bring her. Cinderella asked only for a branch from a hazel bush while her step sisters asked for beautiful dresses, jewels and gold.

She planted the branch her father gave her on top of her mother's graves. She would water it with her tears. The branch became a beautiful tree. Cinderella didn't exactly have a fairy godmother, she had a pretty white bird. It would appear at the tree every time she wished for something and it would bring her anything she wished for.

In the Grimm brothers version of Cinderella there was no glass slipper, it was actually a gold slipper. Like in the Disney version the prince searched high and low to find the owner of the slipper but he really didn't do a good job. He was easily fooled.

Cinderella's stepsisters cut off pieces of there feet just so they could fit into the shoe. One of the sister's cut of the heel of her foot and the other cut of her big toe. So apparently what we have here are two gold diggers who really want to marry the prince.

Since the shoe did fit the stepsisters the prince really did believe each girl was in fact Cinderella but as soon as he would put the girls upon his horse the birds would notify the prince of the scam they tried to pull off. Due to the cutting of the foot, the girls would bleed and when the prince noticed the blood it was game over for those two.

It took a while but finally the prince found the rightful owner of the shoe, Cinderella. And he double checked for blood, just in case.

The prince and Cinderella wedded. Cinderella's step sisters attended the wedding with hopes of getting her good fortune. Pigeons decided to punish them for there wrong doing and left the sisters forever blind.

So thank god for friendly Disney versions right?

The forgotten Disney princesses

Who said being a princess was all glamour?  These lovely lady's are often forgotten and they are not the least bit pleased. What do Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine and all the other princesses have that they don't? Read the whole article to find out! ;)
CAUTION: SPOILER ALERT to anyone who hasn't seen the movies below.

1. Princess Vanellope

People usually identify Snow White (1937) as the youngest member of the Princess bunch but this information was only once upon a time true. Snow White held the record for youngest princess (14 years old) for the longest time, but her record was sub passed by a few new princesses. One of them being, Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph. Her age isn't exactly established in the movie but she's between the ages of 7-9 years old.

Poor Vanellope is bullied by mostly everyone in her town since she is what people call a glitch.  She isn't fully there, she half disappears and then reappears at random moments. This was the doing of Turbo who is actually King Candy. He tried to delete Vanellope's code so he can rule the land but he failed and instead transformed her into a glitch.

Towards the end of the movie, Vanellope actually finds out she is the rightful ruler of  Sugar Rush, in other words she is a princess. She feels being a princess just isn't her, no pink fluffy dresses for her! Instead she returns to her hoodie and decides to be named the president of Sugar Rush. She's too cool for princess! ;)

2. Princess Melody

It isn't hard to see who's daughter this is. That black hair, thick eyebrows, blue eyes and bone structure. Not to mention the mermaid tail and that beautiful singing voice. This young princess (12 years old) is no other than Ariel and prince Eric's daughter, Melody. She appears in the sequel to The little Mermaid; The Little Mermaid ll: Return to the Sea.

A side from being in an awkward stage in her life, being a pre-teen and all she doesn't quite feel like she belongs. Melody's is strongly attracted to the sea and doesn't understand why her mother Ariel doesn't want her near it. She often talks to sea creatures such as Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab. Kids her age tease her for this. Melody names herself the princess of disaster and doesn't understand why she is so different.

She later discovers that she and her mother are more alike than she thought. They both share a love for the sea as it is part  of them. Melody learns that Ariel was only trying to protect her from the evil sea witch Morgana. Once Morgana is vanished the wall that kept melody away from the ocean is destroyed and land and sea are reunited.

3. Princess Elionwy

We can see this young princess in Disney's The Black Caldron (1985). This little lady has quite a mouth on her. She's very talkative and believes girls can do anything boys can do, which they can. Eilonwy is only 13 years old. In the movie she is captured by the Horned King in hopes that she will use her Magic Bauble (pretty orb thing) to locate the black cauldron.

She first meets Taran (the boy below) while she is looking for a way out of the castle. Eilonwy decides to let Taran follow her. Yup! That's right this "girl" is no damsel in distress.

Eilonwy is headstrong and brave. She is also quite fond of Gurgi (the cute dog). Towards the end of the movie Eilonwy and Taran end up kissing with a little push from Gurgi.

4. Kida Nedakh

Whoa! We can clearly see that this girl has got some moves! Yet another princess who is not a damsel in distress. Kida is fierce, she is not only stunningly beautiful but she is also a warrior. We can see her in Disney's 2001 film Atlantis: The Lost Empire and in it's 2003 sequel Milo's Return. Kida resembles someone in there late teens or early 20's but in reality she is the oldest princess of all time. Kida is roughly 8,500-8,800 at least according to Milo.

Thanks to the Atlantean crystal Kida and the rest of her people are able to live abnormally long lives.

Kida is the daughter of the king of Atlantis but later on becomes queen due to her fathers death (her mother scarified her life to save her kingdom in the prologue movie). So no. Elsa is not the first princess to inherit her parent's throne and become queen.

5. Kiari (Kingdom Hearts)

Kiari belong to the game Kingdom Hearts, which is a mix of Disney characters and Final Fantasy characters. In the game Maleficent controls all villains and heartless (evil minions who steal hearts, they are created from darkness). She needs seven princesses of pure heart in order to open up the path to Kingdom Hearts. Theses princesses are Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, Jasmine, Alice and the seventh princess is Kiari. The union of the seven opens a door to darkness.

Kiari's best friends are Sora (brown hair) and Riku (white hair). she met them when she appeared washed up at shore. Kiari is from another world and isnt sure how she ended up at Sora and Riku's world. The 3 kids decide to go explore new worlds together.

Kiari is sweet, compassionate, courageous and would do absolutely anything for her friends as they would for her. In the first game she is 14 years old.

So what do Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Cinderella and all the rest of the of the princesses  from the Disney franchise have that these lovely ladies don't have? It's very simple. It's not that Kida, Vanellope, Kiari, Eilonwy and Melody aren't awesome because they are. So why aren't they official Disney princesses? It has do with the money each movie made. If the film does not do well in the box office then Disney does not invest more on those films. So that means no publicity stunts and no merchandising. That is why we never see theses characters at Disneyworld or Disneyland.

If you really like any of these Disney Princesses then its up to you to change that. The fans always have the power! :)

Mi madre Flora no tuvo tal suerte.
